The world’s most pervasive herbicide has found its way to the Philippines and the Filipino food and agriculture system. Glyphosate, the world’s best selling herbicide, has been used extensively to suppress or destroy unwanted weeds and is used in tandem with herbicide-tolerant GM corn such as Roundup Ready Corn by Monsanto. However, scientific studies on the serious effects of Glyphosate to environment and health are mounting, raising serious concerns to farmers and consumers exposed to the said herbicide.
Magsasaka at Siyentipiko para sa Pag-unlad ng Agrikultura (MASIPAG) will be presenting its study on the presence of glyphosate residues in the soil, water, corn kernels and human urine in GM corn growing areas in Guinbialan, Capiz.
There will also be a seed swapping of traditional corn varieties.
Speakers include:
– Ms Jenny Haygood, researcher of Ibon Foundation and member of Green Action Ph
– Dr Romeo Quijano, Medical Toxicologist and member of the Pesticide Action Network Asia Pacific
– Dr Chito Medina, Environmental Scientist and present MASIPAG partner scientist.
