As a farmer, I will be touring the Big Island of Hawaii, teaching free soil building and heirloom squash growing classes for two weeks in the month of October. Seven years ago, Hawaii suffered a 95% squash crop failure statewide. I decided to draw upon historic seeds, and ancestral knowledge to come up with a solution. I am now in a position where I can help school gardens, backyard growers, and farmers with this growing strategy. Classes will be given free of charge in libraries and community centers around the island. The end result will be more people growing sustainable heirloom squash, soil improvement, seed saving, and they will learn how to cook with this healthy vegetable.
