“First the GMO industry said they would reduce chemical use through Bt-Ht GMOs that were supposed to control pests and weeds. Chemical use increased, and GMO Bt cotton is plagued by pests, herbicide tolerant crops are being overtaken by super weeds.
The industry is now trying to save itself with the promise of GMO “super bananas” to deal with Vit A deficiency. As Mantasa’s research has shown, the super banana is based on Biopriracy of Vit A rich indigenous bananas.
We don’t need more false claims of GMOs based on piracy of indigenous biodiversity and knowledge.
The GMO banana project based on biopiracy must stop”.Vandana Shiva

Love your vitality! Music opens all doors.
I convene the Rural Residents’ Rights Group Inc in the Northern territory, Australia. We’re fighting an Emergency Plant Pest Response Deed that says a minor fungal pest – phyllosticta – that blemishes the skins of bananas making them unsuitable for big supermatkets to sell – warrants eradication of every healthy banana plant in the top end of the NT. More than 40,000 properties have been surveyed so far and surveillance (along with fines and arrests) will be continued indefinitely to ensure that no heritage banana plants survive. This program has had a huge social and environmental impact. Backyarders and market gardeners depend on heritage banana diversity and the EPPRD wants every plant destroyed by the end of this month (April) so the Australian Banana Growers Council and all Australian levels of government can invite transnational banana and chemical companies in to produce tissue-cultured and even GM bananas in a ‘clean and green’ top end NT environment. The APVMA has permitted Plant Health Inspectors (commonly referred to as the secret Freckle Police) to use Glyphosate to poison plants. As many banana plants are grown in a permaculture arrangement, this also poisons all other plants in contact with them. We have a strong resistance group of over 1000 people and are using Ghandian civil disobedience to prevent Freckle Police from entering our properties. As the end of April approaches, we recognise that we need to make our position clear to the rest of the world. We would not resist a serious plant pest epidemic but evidence shows that Freckle in all its guises is only serious to the profits of the monocultural chemically-induced agribusiness world. It is not a risk to local economies, the local environment and local community health /social/public interests. The eradication program in the NT – even in the face of the more serious Panama outbreaks in Queensland that apparently warrant ONLY destroying infected plants – shows up the corporate mentality of our conservative governments in support of the corporate greed of the commercial (Cavendish-dominated) banana industry. It also shows that this program is similar to earlier political programs in the NT that walk all over Territorians’ rights to self-determination and privacy because ‘they can’ (because we’re a Territory not a State).
Thank you for showing us that others around the world are fighting to hold our heritage plant rights together. It makes us stronger and more united.
