Ruling from the General Court of the European Union
The General Court of the European Union has today annulled the European Commission’s decision to refuse the registration of the Stop TTIP European citizens’ initiative. Greens/EFA Vice-President Josep Maria Terricabras comments:
“Today’s judgement from the European Court of Justice has made evident that the European Commission’s use of legalistic arguments to refuse to register the Stop TTIP EU Citizens’ Initiative was a violation of citizens’ democratic rights. We hope that, now that Timmermans is finally willing to review the legislation on the European Citizens’ Initiative, he will implement this ruling after years of denying that the ECI was failing to fulfil the democratic expectations of the public. We owe it to the over 3,000,000 citizens that signed this ECI to finally make the European Citizens’ Initiative a fully functional tool of direct democracy in Europe.”
